Chadwick Court, Preston
Flats
This modern block of 10 flats is conveniently located close to the railway station and shops.
The name 'Chadwick' was chosen to honour two Lancastrians. One was the chief aero designer at AVRO, who designed the Lancaster Bomber. The other was Professor Chadwick, who at Manchester University completed key work in increasing our understanding of the structure of matter including identifying the existence of neutrons.
They have been constructed using the latest timber 'stick build' method - an environmentally efficient design that enables a highly insulated and attractive building. Each flat's central heating is fuelled by a tiny 6kw electrical heater.
As well as the high thermal insulation the timber design and close attention to robust detail leads to very good noise insulation. Tests on these flats showed that noise levels were up to 9db inside building regulation requirements. Note that 10db halves the perceived sound levels.
The outer skin was cement rendered directly onto the timber frame building. The proprietary render contains silicon so that water rolls of it and because it is self coloured there is no maintenance.
All exterior surfaces such as soffits and fascias are finished in UPVC to eliminate maintenance.
